Windsor isn’t only famous for being the birthplace of hockey

Windsor is home to King’s-Edgehill School, which is the oldest private educational institute in the British Commonwealth. Founded in 1788, King’s-Edgehill is also one of only 400 schools internationally that offer the International Baccalaureate Program.

Along the Town’s waterfront, at 20 Water Street, you will find a large mural featuring the waterfront of Windsor as it looked in 1910. This mural carries the title of Atlantic Canada’s Largest Historic Mural! Definitely a must-see!

Windsor is also home to the world famous Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. The theatre supports a touring troupe, and children’s program. They perform locally and internationally.

The Windsor Pumpkin Regatta is held during the first part of October. This is an annual 800m race on Lake Pesaquid in a pumpkin. Yes, a pumpkin. Founded in 1999 by Danny Dill who is the son of the breeder of the Atlantic Giant Pumpkin.

The race actually caught a lot of popularity in 2005 when Martha Stewart was to be a guest and contestant in the small-town pumpkin race. As her pastel pumpkin made it to the race, Stewart did not due to issues getting across the border into Canada.

History

In 1765, New England Planters who were settlers from New England colonies many ended up calling the rich soils of the Annapolis Valley home. The Town of Windsor then started an agricultural fair to give local farmers the chance to show and share their crops and livestock with their town and surrounding communities.

This welcoming town in West Hants Municipality is actually the result of a complete rebuild after a devastating fire in 1897. The resilient residents of the community rose together and rebuilt and created what you see today.

Today this fair is known as the Hants County Exhibition, it has the name of being the oldest agricultural fair in North America. During the third and fourth weekends of September, go and enjoy some rides, yummy food, livestock shows, and much more!

Working in West Hants

Due to its proximity to Halifax and the Annapolis Valley, Windsor is an ideal commuter community. Major employers in Windsor and West Hants are municipal jobs, health care, retail and at Hants Community Hospital.

Fundy Gypsum, a mining company operating gypsum mines just east of town at West Hants and Hantsport, was a major employer in the region until it closed in 2011.

Moving to Windsor, West Hants

While most homes for sale are rural lots, there are a few subdivisions and new developments that are growing to meet the demand for housing. These include the Crossing, Fairfield Park, and The Meadows located in neighbouring communities of Garlands Crossing, Windsor Forks, and Falmouth.

If you are looking to build there are a growing number of new construction companies in the area. The wait time could be 6-13 months for a new build.

The first step would be determining where you want to live and then focusing on finding a lot in that area. Most builders will build within their area even if in another developer subdivision.
